The series will tell two parallel origin stories: how Jamie's parents came to meet and Claire's parents' romance. "Outlander: Blood of My Blood" went into development in February 2022. The decision to include Claire's parents in the show is sure to be a welcome one. Not much is known about Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp beyond the fact that they died when Claire was a young girl. "We're thrilled to be telling the stories of these two couples," said Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner, executive producer and writer on both "Outlander" and "Outlander: Blood of My Blood."

"Netflix missed their numbers, and Wall Street woke up," said Paul Hardart, director of NYU Stern's entertainment, media and technology program. A wide range of companies and employees were impacted, from entertainment giants to independent production companies to Hollywood talent agencies. More consolidation among the legacy media companies and independent production companies is widely expected, which often entails job cuts. Entertainment companies will get back to staffing up, but the jobs will be in stronger growth areas like gaming, streaming, and advertising, more than in filmed entertainment programming. Here are the Hollywood companies, listed alphabetically, that have made layoffs since the summer.

A Starz spokesperson declined to comment on the number of cuts but confirmed the authenticity of the letter to staff. Lionsgate and Starz have been part of the same company since December 2016, when Lionsgate acquired Starz for $4.4 billion. That marriage will end in the first quarter, when the company plans to spin Lionsgate as a separately traded company. Starz announced last quarter it planned to exit Latin America to focus on the U.S., U.K. and Canada. Streaming TV, which once seemed to be infinitely expanding, is experiencing shrinkage. Disney+ recently precanceled its already-made children’s fantasy adaptation, “The Spiderwick Chronicles.” Hulu’s acclaimed Russian-monarchy comedy “The Great” has been deposed. A string of high-profile Netflix cancellations has become the stuff of protests and memes. With all this has come a new belief: That TV series are now being canceled at an unprecedented rate, and you can’t count on any show sticking around anymore. The streaming era, in truth, has nothing on the blood baths of the regular-old-TV era.

“It’s so hard being a woman in 1973,” she pouts, still sprawled. “If only there was a way to make a change.” Then the shirtless men in breakaway pants appear behind her. An eyeful of oiled torsos, however muscular, may not have been a perfect substitute for real social transformation. This playful scene, an imagined forerunner to a Chippendales-style revue, occurs in the second season of “Minx,” which began on Starz on Friday. A workplace comedy set at an erotic magazine for women, “Minx” revisits the 1970s collisions, confusions and correspondences between women’s liberation and the sexual revolution.

For the six years he worked on “The Mentalist,” beginning in 2009, Jordan Harper’s job was far more than a writing gig. But by 2018, when he worked on “Hightown,” a drama for Starz, the business of television writing had changed substantially. The job of overseeing the filming and editing fell largely to the showrunner, the writer-producer in charge of a series. “On a show like ‘The Mentalist,’ we’d all go to set,” Mr. Harper said. They say the new approach requires more frequent job changes, making their work less steady, and has lowered writers’ earnings.

But this was almost the end of something for “Minx.” HBO Max, which ran the first season in 2022, canceled the show as the second was finishing production, leaving fans holding an empty brown wrapper. Season 1, in which Joyce started Minx with the low-rent pornographer Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson), was a rough ride; its raunchy pop history and sitcommy odd-couple high jinks didn’t completely mesh. But I’d rather watch a show that does an exciting thing inconsistently than one that does a dull thing well. The eight new episodes don’t entirely clean up its freewheeling mess, but they make up for it in verve and enthusiasm. “Minx” is a racy, smart snapshot, and you just have to accept certain blemishes unretouched.
